Voices from the Void: How Hidden Histories Built Illinois Tech | April Welch | TEDxIllinois Tech
NOTE FROM TED: TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdfIn this talk, April Welch uncovers a lesser-known history behind the founding of Illinois Tech. Moving beyond familiar institutional narratives, she highlights the bold choices, overlooked contributors, and transformative acts of inclusion that helped shape the university’s identity. From Philip D. Armour’s early commitment to openness and educational access to Julia A. Beveridge’s leadership in Armour Mission and Armour Institute, this talk shows how courageous decisions from the past continue to challenge us to build a more just, imaginative, and human future. April Welch is the Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Director of the Esports and Digital Arts Center at Illinois Institute of Technology. A passionate advocate for education, technology, and community empowerment, she leads initiatives that open doors for students and community members alike — from establishing Illinois Tech's thriving esports program to helping secure a $2 million federal grant for the Bronzeville Opportunity Engine. Welch has spoken at major events such as C2E2, IdeaCon, and the Canadian Games Study Association Conference, and co-hosts the Warrior GMR podcast. Her work has been featured on ABC 7 News, NPR, and WVON Chicago. With degrees in Business Administration, Fine Arts, Applied Professional Studies, and Technical Communication, she is now a Ph.D. candidate at Illinois Tech. Welch’s leadership reflects a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and building the next generation of tech leaders. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
