Mastery vs. Perfection: Turning Mistakes into Music | Mitch Peart | TEDxPeel District School Board
What happens when perfection breaks in the middle of a performance and the music doesn’t stop? In his TEDx talk, Grade 11 student and saxophonist Mitch recounts a legendary 1963 Miles Davis concert where a single wrong chord by Herbie Hancock threatens to derail everything. What follows, however, is a masterclass in improvisation, as Miles Davis transforms the mistake into something intentional and unforgettable. Through this moment in jazz history, Mitch explores the tension between chasing perfection and developing true mastery. This talk will change how you perceive mistakes and what it really means to be ready when everything goes off script. Mitch Peart is a jazz saxophonist and student from Mississauga, Ontario. For the past five years, he has studied the art of improvisation, performing with ensembles such as the Peel Jazz Honour Ensemble and the Jazz 91.1 Youth Big Band.Through his experiences, Mitch discovered an important principle that serves far beyond jazz: mistakes are only what you make of them. In his TEDx talk, he explores how improvisation reshaped his relationship with failure, and how learning to embrace uncertainty can unlock excellence, resilience, and growth far beyond the stage. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
