South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on Israel to immediately release pro-Palestinian activists intercepted on the Global Sumud Flotilla en route to Gaza. The flotilla, carrying around 500 people including politicians and climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, was stopped by the Israeli navy in international waters. At least five South Africans, including Mandla Mandela, were onboard. Ramaphosa said the interception violated international law and infringed on the sovereignty of the nations involved. Pretoria has long criticised Israel’s actions in Gaza, including a 2023 case at the International Court of Justice. Worldwide protests have denounced the flotilla interception.---
