El presidente ruso, Vladimir Putin, dijo el día 24 de febrero que Rusia y Estados Unidos deben dar el primer paso hacia la construcción de la confianza mutua para resolver la crisis ucraniana y otros asuntos urgentes, sugiriendo una posible cooperación en múltiples ámbitos.Durante una entrevista con el canal Rusia-1, Putin señaló que ya existen contactos comerciales entre empresas rusas y estadounidenses.
Putin destacó que las empresas estadounidenses en Rusia podrían beneficiarse al acceder al mercado ruso. También mencionó la posibilidad de colaboración entre Rusia y Estados Unidos en materia de metales de tierras raras y energía.
El 12 de febrero Putin sostuvo una conversación telefónica con el presidente Donald Trump, donde ambos coincidieron en la necesidad de negociaciones directas para detener el conflicto en Ucrania.
