Choosing jail over war - How US students protested their conscription to Vietnam | DW Documentary
The documentary tells the story of American conscientious objectors. The fates of those courageous young Americans who refused to serve in the Vietnam War have been little-documented, until now.Their non-violent actions - from burning their draft cards to consciously accepting prison sentences of several years - became a decisive driving force behind the anti-war movement. Their resistance contributed significantly to the abolition of conscription and thus increased the political pressure that ultimately led to the end of the Vietnam War.
The film portrays prominent figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Muhammad Ali, who took a public stand despite massive criticism, as well as the founder of the resistance movement, David Harris, whose commitment continued even during his imprisonment. Their stories are complemented by numerous voices of lesser-known conscientious objectors, whose personal stories reveal the breadth and determination of the movement.
With rare archival footage, powerful interviews and historical depth, the film shows a youth-led movement that placed moral conviction above obedience to the state. "We Won’t Fight in Vietnam!" not only sheds light on a key chapter in American history, but also points to the continuing importance of non-violent protest in today's social and political movements.
