Palestinian child misses first day of school as family remains trapped under Qusra settler siege

It's nearly a month since Israeli settlers began to lay siege to several homes in the village of Qusra, in the occupied West Bank — part of an effort to force Palestinians from their land. Four-year-old Kinda is trapped in one of those homes, missing the start of her first year of school. Her aunt said: "The girls have many questions. Why are we still here? Why can't we go out or have people visit us? Any sound they hear outside gets them worried and scared." What started as a siege by Israeli settlers has now turned into a closed military zone, with Israeli soldiers present and military gates established near the besieged homes. Kinda's teacher is also missing the beginning of the school year, joining her students online. Israeli settler attacks are averaging six per day, according to the UN, alongside a surge in illegal settlement outposts. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the army to dismantle some illegal structures in response to US pressure, but outposts dismantled today can reappear tomorrow. With Israeli elections set for the end of October, the report examines an increasingly open campaign of Palestinian displacement and land seizure.

Al Jazeera's Nida Ibrahim reports from Qusra in the occupied West Bank.
