A dicembre 1920, la città di Fiume vive il suo drammatico “Natale di sangue”. Dopo mesi di resistenza da parte dei legionari guidati da Gabriele D’Annunzio, il governo di Giovanni Giolitti interviene per porre fine all’occupazione. L’accordo del Trattato di Rapallo del 1920 stabilisce uno Stato autonomo sotto la protezione italiana, ma per renderlo operativo è necessario allontanare D’Annunzio, deciso a non arrendersi.Il poeta reagisce immediatamente: fa saltare ponti, occupa isole strategiche e prepara trincee in città. Ai suoi ordini ci sono oltre 2.500 uomini, pronti a difendere Fiume con mitragliatrici e bombe a mano. Nonostante la loro ferocia, le truppe regie guidate dal generale Enrico Caviglia iniziano il bombardamento già dalla vigilia di Natale.
