In Amir Hampel's talk, he reframes anxiety not as an internal defect, but as a byproduct of navigating unfamiliar "cultural languages", the unspoken norms and social cues that govern how we connect. Drawing from his research on mental health, he argues that the confusion many feel in social environments is often a sign of being in the process of learning a new cultural grammar rather than a personal failure. Amir encourages shifting from self-doubt to curiosity, emphasizing that confidence is built through active interaction rather than fixed traits. Ultimately, he reassures the audience that feeling like an outsider is simply a stage of learning, reminding us that "when you feel like something is wrong with you, it's likely just a language you're still mastering".Amir Hampel is a medical anthropologist specializing in mental health. Based on ethnographic research on self-help programs popular with Chinese youth, He has analyzed how markets, mobility, and rapidly changing values are affecting young people's anxieties about personal identity and social belonging. Amir is now studying emerging uses for Chinese medicine for mental health issues including depression, autism, and ADHD. Using digital research methods and interviews with clinicians, scientists, and patients, he is investigating how these therapies are being shaped by cultural, commercial, and technological forces including an expanding set of AI tools.
