Why do people obey powerful people? Is real power about money, authority, fear or respect?
And why do some of the world's most powerful leaders eventually lose everything?
In this video, we explore The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene through three fascinating true stories from psychology and history.
From Stanley Milgram's shocking obedience experiments to India's Emergency in 1975 and the fall of Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986, you'll discover how power actually works.
More importantly, you'll learn how to recognize manipulation, protect your independence and build genuine influence in your own life.
---
3 STORIES THAT REVEAL THE PSYCHOLOGY OF POWER
STORY 1 — THE MILGRAM EXPERIMENT
In the 1960s, psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted experiments at Yale University.
Ordinary people were instructed to administer what they believed were painful electric shocks to another person.
In the baseline experiment, approximately 65% continued to the maximum indicated voltage.
Why did so many people obey?
The experiment reveals how perceived authority can influence human behaviour, even when people feel uncomfortable.
STORY 2 — INDIA'S EMERGENCY (1975–1977)
In 1975, India entered a period of Emergency under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Civil liberties were restricted, opposition leaders were detained and the press faced censorship.
Yet in the 1977 general election, the ruling Congress party was defeated.
The lesson?
Having official authority doesn't guarantee lasting public trust or support.
STORY 3 — THE FALL OF FERDINAND MARCOS
In 1986, Ferdinand Marcos controlled powerful government institutions in the Philippines.
But after a disputed election, military defections and massive public demonstrations, his rule collapsed.
During the People Power Revolution, ordinary citizens gathered near armed soldiers and military vehicles.
How could a ruler with an army lose power?
Because authority depends partly on whether people and institutions continue to support it.

4 IMPORTANT LAWS OF POWER
LAW 5 — GUARD YOUR REPUTATION
Your credibility and reputation influence how others respond to you.
Build trust through consistent actions.
LAW 11 — UNDERSTAND DEPENDENCE
Dependence can create power imbalances.
Develop valuable skills and financial independence so you're less easily controlled.
LAW 43 — WORK ON HEARTS AND MINDS
Fear may produce obedience, but genuine relationships and trust can create willing cooperation.
LAW 48 — ASSUME FORMLESSNESS
Adapt when circumstances change.
Powerful positions can become fragile when people refuse to adjust.
Understanding these laws doesn't mean using manipulation. It means recognizing how influence operates.
---
WHAT REAL POWER MEANS
Money gives resources.
Position gives authority.
Fear can produce compliance.
Reputation creates credibility.
Trust creates cooperation.
But obedience and genuine respect are not the same thing.
Real power isn't only about controlling others.
It's also about building enough skills, credibility, relationships and independence to make your own choices.
