Les rencontres "par ordinateur" ne sont pas nées avec la généralisation d'Internet et des smartphones. À la fin des années1950, deux étudiants américains en génie électrique, Jim Harvey et Phil Fialer, créent un programme de rencontres baptisé Happy Families Planning Service ("service de planification de familles heureuses"). Pour le mettre au point, ils organisent une fête avec 49femmes et 49hommes invités à remplir un questionnaire de façon à établir leur profil psychologique ("Êtes-vous plutôt introverti ou extraverti?"), puis calculent les taux de compatibilités de chaque couple hypothétique. Le premier algorithme de l'amour était né… Près de soixante-dix ans plus tard, la technologie est partout. Est-elle pour autant devenue le meilleur moyen de trouver l’amour? Des années1960 à nos jours, Julia Waldmann retrace l’évolution des modes de rencontres amoureuses, qui s'est faite au même rythme que la libération des mœurs, l’émancipation des femmes ou la reconnaissance des personnes LGBTQIA+.
