20:40 Concluding remarks. Beethoven 5 and the French Revolution
In this video, Matthew King considers how Beethoven's 5th symphony, once so revolutionary, has become over-familiar. He reads from the Memoirs of Hector Berlioz and discovers a fascinating account of the visceral impact of the first Parisian performances of Beethoven Symphonies at the Paris Conservatoire in 1828. The Memoirs also contain Berlioz's account of how he discovered that his professor, François-Joseph Fétis had altered a passage in the 2nd movement. In this video, Matthew King plays excerpts from transcriptions of Beethoven's 5th Symphony and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantasque by Franz Liszt.
Performances of Beethoven 5 in this video are by the CBSO, conducted by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla at the Proms in 2017, and a performance by Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, conducted by John Eliot Gardiner in 2016. There is an excerpt of Beethoven 9, also with the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra, conducted by John Eliot Gardiner in 2020 at the Palau de la Música Catalana, Barcelona. The excerpt from Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique is from a performance at Versailles in 2019 with the ORR, conducted by John Eliot Gardiner, and there is an excerpt from the 1994 film 'Immortal Beloved' with Gary Oldman as Beethoven.
