Erik Alfred Leslie Satie was born in 1866 in Honfleur, Normandy. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he became a pianist performing in the cafés and cabarets of Montmartre. He shortly thereafter became a composer of primarily solo piano works, most famously of the Gymnopédies and Gnosiennes, experimental works that employ simplicity and repetition, alongside original melodies, to create eerie, mystical atmospheres and effects. A pioneer in many respects, Satie was also one of the first to compose music specifically for cinema, as well as developing the idea of musique d’ameublement (or, furniture music), music meant as an easy-listening background to various activities.
