What Is a Camera Sensor?

A camera sensor is the digital equivalent of film stock — it captures light, converts it into electrical signals, and shapes every quality of your image. Dynamic range, low-light performance, depth of field, field of view, noise — all of it flows from sensor size. Most camera conversations start and end at megapixels. This one starts at the sensor and goes deeper, from how photosites work all the way to full frame versus crop sensor tradeoffs that affect every frame you shoot.

In this video, we break down how sensors work at the photosite level, walk through the two main types (CCD and CMOS), and explain global vs. rolling shutter — then map every major sensor size from large format cinema cameras like the Alexa 65 (used on Barbie and Furiosa) down to the 1-inch sensors in smartphones and drones. We cover full frame, Super 35, APS-C, and Micro Four Thirds: what each does well and where each falls short.

One of the least understood aspects of camera sensors is crop factor — the phenomenon where the same lens behaves differently depending on sensor size. Understanding crop factor is the difference between knowing exactly what your camera will capture before you press record, and being surprised on set. We walk through how it works with real lens examples and practical math.

If you’ve ever wondered why your footage doesn’t look cinematic despite using the same lenses as a professional production — or why the camera sensor size comparison chart always left you with more questions than answers — this video is for you.
