For quite some time now I have been grappling with the realization that the privileges I hold in this life (my education, my freedom, my rights as a woman) all came from a roll of the dice: my family's socioeconomic status, as well as the wealth of the nation I was born into, dictated countless opportunities in my life. It is apparent that the line between what is a fair capitalist society and what is a bewildering, unjust gap between the top and the bottom has been crossed: yet, few people speak about it. The financial inequality in this world isn't often heard of, but is instead commonly accepted, as if it were merely a part of reality to come to terms with. Over the course of my speech, I aim to firstly expose the audience to the true staggering scale of the differences in wealth: stunning the audience at the start of my speech with this will hook them to my talk. Furthermore, I want to delve into the root causes of financial inequality, and how we as a society have come to this reality. I also want to tackle the topic not only from a single nation's perspective; the countries in this world's GDP plays a huge role in their sphere of influence, and in their citizens' quality of life. Lastly, to tie in with the theme of the event, I'll give the audience a call to action, and advocate for ways to reduce the immense gap that has been created worldwide. I am a high school sophomore who believes my greatest attribute is my passion for everything I set my mind to. I am intrigued by all areas of science and international relations, and have participated and won several math competitions and MUN conferences. I am currently involved in AOSR’s Speech and Debate, MUN, and STEM clubs. I am also a third culture kid: I was born in Italy and spent my childhood in South America (Argentina and Brazil) allowing me to experience countless cultures and meet diverse individuals. Furthermore, I adore reading, as I learned to read when I was only three years old, and haven’t stopped since. In my eyes, reading is a way to experience countless lives in the span of one: as George R. R. Martin said, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” I constantly seek a challenge to defy, striving not for perfection but for excellence, in doing so constantly improving myself as I journey through life.
