Irán declaró que considera a la medida un acto ilegal de “piratería” y amenazó con atacar diferentes puertos del golfo Pérsico como represalia. Trump ordenó este bloqueo tras 21 horas de negociaciones entre Estados Unidos e Irán en Islamabad, Pakistán, en las que no se logró llegar a un acuerdo para poner fin a la guerra. El anuncio del bloqueo por parte de Trump llevó a un aumento de los precios del petróleo a nivel mundial.
Nos acompaña Ervand Abrahamian, profesor emérito de Historia en el Centro de Graduados de la Universidad de la Ciudad de Nueva York, quien anticipa que “Estados Unidos comenzará a bombardear instalaciones petroleras iraníes. Irán tomará represalias bombardeando instalaciones petroleras y gasíferas en el golfo. Entonces, los precios del petróleo podrían realmente dispararse. Hay gente que estima que puede alcanzar los 200 dólares el barril”. Abrahamian enfatiza que el alza de los precios de los combustibles tendrá implicaciones a largo plazo para la economía internacional.
