Asim Munir’s powers in Pakistan have expanded dramatically. Pakistan’s Parliament has passed the Defence Forces of Pakistan Act, 2026 and amendments to the National Command Authority Act, creating a more centralised military command structure under Field Marshal Asim Munir, who serves concurrently as Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief.
The new framework places Pakistan’s Army, Navy and Air Force under a unified command, while giving the Chief of Defence Forces extensive authority over military operations and personnel matters—including the power to retire, discharge, retain personnel and alter prescribed retirement limits. Munir will also serve as the Prime Minister’s principal military adviser on national security and defence.
But what does this mean for Pakistan’s democracy and civil-military balance? Is this simply a military restructuring, or does it mark another step towards de facto military rule in Pakistan?
In this video, we explain Asim Munir’s new powers, Pakistan’s Defence Forces Act 2026, the 27th Constitutional Amendment, Pakistan’s new military command structure, the National Command Authority, nuclear command changes, and what this could mean for Pakistan’s political future and India-Pakistan relations.
For UPSC aspirants, this is an important International Relations and Current Affairs development covering Pakistan, civil-military relations, constitutional changes, strategic forces and South Asian geopolitics.
