El portavoz del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores chino, Guo Jiakun, declaró el 19 de enero que China ha instado firmemente a Estados Unidos a que deje de utilizar la denominada "amenaza china" como pretexto para promover sus propios intereses geopolíticos y económicos, en particular en lo referente a Groenlandia. El portavoz reiteró que debe respetarse el derecho internacional basado en los propósitos y principios de la Carta de las Naciones Unidas.Estas declaraciones se produjeron en respuesta al anuncio del presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, de imponer aranceles a varios países europeos por el tema de Groenlandia.
