Terminator 2D: NO FATE - Story Mode, No Death S-Rank 1CC (Hard / Hasta La Vista)
Terminator 2D: No Fate is a new run and gun from Bitmap Bureau, who previously made Xeno Crisis and Final Vendetta. I never played Xeno Crisis, but Final Vendetta was a great beat 'em up, so I've been looking forward to this Terminator game ever since it was announced. It turned out about as well as I'd hoped, but it has some issues.First and foremost, they're adapting the Terminator 2 movie, so that alone presents some problems. The movie is full of famous scenes, like the bike chase and the asylum escape. So they need to include those in the game, but how do you make them compelling? Autoscroll sections are a weak point in most run and guns, and this one is not an exception. When you're escaping the truck with John, you just collect speed ups along the route, and when Arnold joins him, you just shoot the truck and dodge debris in the road. It's not bad, but it's not something I look forward to in replays. I don't know how they could make it much better though while keeping it faithful to the scene, so maybe the best thing they could do is just shorten it a bit.
Likewise, the asylum has some stealth elements in it, but you *can* just run and fight your way through the guards. But it's risky, because the guards can kill you in one hit. You also have to avoid the T1000, but there's only a couple sections where you have to hide from him, so it's not too bad. But again, this is not a stage I look forward to in replays.
There are some other gimmicky stages, but the only other one in this path is the beat em up stage where you play as Naked Arnold after he's sent back in time. Most of this stage is exploitable because you can just spam his dash tackle and be safe, but I tried to fight normally. The audio is also screwed up in this video because this section has some licensed music, like Bad to the Bone. It causes a copyright flag on YouTube, so I just distorted the audio and it went under the bot radar. It'd be nice if they had a "streamer" option to replace those songs with original tracks (I think Hi-Fi Rush has this?), but that's just a nitpick that affects a small group of people.
I mentioned it earlier, but this game has branching paths that deviate from the original story. The alternate paths have several unique stages that you wouldn't normally get to play, so it's a pretty cool feature. One of the routes has 15 or 16 stages in it, which takes around an hour to get through, so I assume that's the longest and hardest one. I just stuck with the canon story for my first video, but I'll do the others next.
I played on Hard difficulty (Hasta La Vista), but there is one more above it (Judgment). Hard is a pretty well balanced mode to learn the game through, since it has all of the hidden machine guns you can find as Sarah, and all of the health packs. I only tried Judgment difficulty once, but it seemed like it has no power ups or healing items at all, so it's quite a bit tougher. You'll have to learn the game thoroughly to clear it.
This game has fun scoring too, and it's very simple. Your multiplier keeps going up by x1 every time you kill 10 enemies, until you max out at x10 (filling your chain meter after this does nothing, I think). Get hit, and your chain is reset. Killing enemies with melee attacks instead of shooting them gives you 2x as many points, too. It's a simple system and it works well, but you can milk some respawning enemies at certain points. An easy way to fix that is by making the time bonus at the end of the stage extremely valuable. They might have intentionally made it this way, but personally I think systems that value speed (in addition to killing enemies and collecting items) work best in games like this.
Finally, there are several different modes to play, but they basically just mix up the stage order. There are quite a few stages in this game in total, so some modes only have you go through maybe 6, and others go up to 16. Some emphasize score, while others go purely by time. It's nice that there are so many different arrangements, I guess.
So overall this is a very good game. I think people will naturally want to compare it to Neon Inferno, since they're both run and guns that came out close to one another, but each game's goals are a bit different. Maybe a better comparison would be Data East's RoboCop 2, which is another great adaptation of an action movie. I like all of them, but maybe Terminator is my least favorite of the trio? They're all worth playing, though.
Terminator 2D: No Fate is available on all platforms for $29.99, but some stores have a launch discount for now (I bought it for $26.99 on Steam). There's even physical editions if you'd rather go that route!
