Un chef terroriste algérien surnommé "le Ben Laden du désert", leader du GSPC, cherche à établir un sanctuaire d’Al-Qaïda dans le désert et à former une légion islamiste. Après avoir tué en Algérie, il a enlevé en 2003 une trentaine de touristes européens, dont une est morte d’insolation.Les autres ont été libérés contre rançon par l’Allemagne. Disparu un temps, il a finalement été capturé par des rebelles tchadiens Toubous qui le retiennent dans le désert du Tibesti.
