The first sounds from Mars—recorded by a musician and NASA | Jason Achilles | TEDxManhattanBeach
What happens when a musician with no formal science training helps NASA capture the first sounds ever recorded on Mars—and hears only silence? In this deeply human story, Jason Achilles traces a journey from childhood wonder to crushing failure to a breakthrough that traveled 127 million miles back to Earth. This talk celebrates curiosity, persistence, and how chasing the dreams that scare us most can change a life—and expand humanity’s sense of possibility. Jason Achilles bridges the worlds of music and space exploration. A Chicago-born composer and sonic innovator, he helped capture the first recorded sounds from Mars, transforming how humans connect with the cosmos through sound.Inspired early by Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, Vladimir Horowitz, and The Muppet Show, Jason developed a musical vision that reached beyond Earth. While earning his BA in Music at UC Berkeley, he composed Schizmatique No. 1 & 2, later recorded in Prague and Budapest and premiered at Carnegie Hall and Segerstrom Center in 2024.
In 2021, Jason partnered with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to help design and inform the operation of a microphone aboard the Mars Perseverance rover, expanding human sensory experience to another planet. Featured in WIRED and global media, his work reveals how art and science converge to reshape exploration, perception, and connection. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
