Nepal's tea industry is facing a major crisis after India introduced mandatory quality testing for tea imports under a revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). More than 80 tea factories and estates in eastern Nepal have halted operations, putting around 60,000 workers and staff at risk. Industry leaders say the additional testing requirements have caused export delays, increased costs, and raised business uncertainty. With shipments stuck at border points and inventories piling up, tea producers warn that prolonged disruption could threaten the future of one of Nepal's most important export sectors.
