Ivory Coast: Orchestra Offers Escape From Child Labour, Poverty | Firstpost AfricaThe children of a small northern rural town of Odienne in the West African nation of Ivory Coast are using music to shape their lives. Around 140 children of the town, between the ages of six and sixteen, have formed an orchestra that performed for the Ivorian President on the Independence Day celebration of the country last year. Their performance at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations was also a hit. Odienne relies heavily on agriculture, which sometimes involves child labour too. The region also reels under uncertainty deriving from high unemployment. These children use their music to escape from the harsh reality and also use it as a medium to change it.
