Donald Trump setzt die Nationalgarde in Washington D.C. verstärkt zur Bekämpfung von Unruhen und Kriminalität ein. Mehr als 4600 Soldaten sind inzwischen in der Hauptstadt stationiert – und der Einsatz kostet die US-Steuerzahler mehr als drei Millionen Dollar am Tag.

Trump selbst feiert die Maßnahme als Erfolg: Die Zahl der Tötungsdelikte in Washington ist deutlich gesunken. Doch Experten warnen davor, diesen Rückgang allein der Nationalgarde zuzuschreiben. Die Gewaltkriminalität war bereits vor Trumps Amtsantritt rückläufig.

Für Kritiker bleibt deshalb vor allem eine teure Machtdemonstration des US-Präsidenten. Sie werfen Trump vor, Milliarden für einen Einsatz auszugeben, dessen tatsächlicher Einfluss auf schwere Gewaltverbrechen nicht nachgewiesen ist. Unsere Reporterin Alina Quast berichtet aus Washington D.C.
