In this video, Matthew King introduces what he believes to be Satie’s 8th Gnossienne, composed in 1897, and left unpublished until 1968, when it was given the title ‘Petite Ouverture à Danser’, and slightly altered by the composer Robert Caby. Matthew explains why Satie is a great composer, who crafted perfect little gems, and why this piece seems to belong within the same genre as the composer’s other Gnossiennes. The performance in this video refers to Satie’s original manuscript which is displayed at the end of the video with an animated commentary.
The short Messiaen excerpt in this video is from his 1974 masterpiece ‘Des canyons aux étoiles…’ for piano and large ensemble, in a recording by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, with Roger Muraro (piano solo) conducted by Myung-Whun Chung.
