Lindsay Clancy trial: Jury ends first day of deliberations without verdict

Jury deliberations are underway after closing arguments concluded in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial following 21 days of testimony.

The panel of nine women and three men is weighing whether Clancy is guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder or manslaughter in the deaths of her three children, or not criminally responsible.

If convicted of first-degree murder, she faces life without parole; if found not criminally responsible, she would be committed to a state mental health facility.

Clancy faces three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children, Cora, Dawson and Callan. She does not dispute killing them but says she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.

Clancy's defense attorney delivered his closing argument Thursday, displaying family photos as he urged jurors to find she was not in her right mind when she killed her three children.

"This is a prosecution that has ripped the soul out of this girl," Kevin Reddington told the jury, pointing to images of Clancy with her family. He blamed "the damn medicine and the lousy medical care that she got."

The prosecutor delivered her closing argument as well, telling jurors the case is not about the mental health system but about Clancy's state of mind when she killed her three children.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague said there was "no dispute" Clancy was mentally ill and tried to kill herself. "That's not the issue in this trial," she said. "The issue is whether at the time she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan, she knew the difference between right and wrong and whether she could conform her behavior to the requirements of the law."
