Car enthusiasts are wrong about the good ol’ days of turbocharged sports cars being behind us, which have truly never been better. From a driving perspective, turbocharged cars have often suffered from three major flaws: a narrow power band - so no bottom end torque, turbo lag - so delayed response, and poor throttle control - especially at partial throttle. But recent history reverses pretty much all of these: massive, wide torque curves, minimal turbo lag, and exceptional throttle control.
What better vehicle to demonstrate how far we’ve come than the C8 Corvette ZR1, with over 800 lb-ft of torque from 3000 to nearly 7000 RPM, a clever anti-lag system, and beautiful throttle control, in a car with 1064 horsepower!? This is made possible thanks to two Borgwarner turbochargers, which Borgwarner claims are the largest passenger car twin turbochargers in the market (to be released to date - 9/23/24). In this video we’ll deep dive into the engineering of the anti-lag strategy, how throttle control is enhanced with electronic waste gates, what turbocharger redline is, and discuss overboost - where the ZR1 reaches boost pressures as high as 24 psi, 4 psi over what the rated power output requires.
