Quando diciamo Mark Rothko, immediatamente vengono in mente le sue composizioni astratte: enormi quadri fatti di larghe campiture di colore, pennellate omogenee, accostamenti che prediligono i rossi, i blu, i gialli e i grigi. A prima vista non c’entra con la pittura rinascimentale, che è una straordinaria rivelazione di forme, prospettiva, figura.
E invece no. La mostra allestita da qualche settimana a Palazzo Strozzi, Firenze, sta riscuotendo un enorme successo proprio perché nata nella città culla dell’arte rinascimentale. Il progetto, curato da Christopher Rothko (figlio del pittore) ed Elena Geuna è imperdibile proprio perché allargata al Convento di San Marco, territorio artistico del Beato Angelico e alla Biblioteca Laurenziana, progettata da Michelangelo. Non solo. Questo legame strettissimo con l’antico aiuta a capire le vene dell’espressionismo astratto di Rothko, uno dei maggiori artisti del secolo scorso, nato a Dvinsk, Russia, nel 1903 e morto suicida nel suo studio a New York nel 1970.
