Jalan dari Bandara Waioti hingga Gelora Samador yang baru diaspal dipenuhi bendera Vatikan dan bendera Merah Putih. Umat pun berjubel di sisi kiri dan kanan jalan menanti kedatangan Sri Paus.
Suara menggelegar pesawat Hercules C-130 bercat abu-abu yang ditumpangi Paus mendarat di Bandara Waioti (Kini Bandara Frans Seda).
Pemimpin umat Katolik sejagat itu menjejakan kaki di Maumere pada Rabu, 11 Oktober 1989.
Udara Kota Maumere yang semula sangat panas, setika berubah menjadi teduh. Cahaya matahari seperti terhalang awan saat Sri Paus Yohanes Paulus II tiba.
Ratusan ribu umat Katolik datang dari berbagai penjuru di Kabupaten Sikka, Pulau Flores, Makassar dan kota-kota dari Pulau Jawa memenuhi Gelora Samador Maumere.
Kunjungan Paus Yohanes Paulus II ke Maumere, hampir 35 tahun silam itu menjadi tonggak baru perkembangan gereja Katolik lebih khusus umat Katolik di Kabupaten Sikka dan Pulau Flores.
Bagi umat Katolik kunjungan itu memberi pengalaman pribadi baik iman dan panggilan.
