Deadly attacks in Pakistan raise fears of wider regional instability

An explosion caused by a bomb-laden rickshaw in a busy market in Sarai Naurang, Lakki Marwat district, has killed at least nine people and wounded about 30 others. Two traffic police officers and a woman are among the dead, according to emergency workers and a medical official. The attack comes just days after 21 police officers were killed in a bombing and gun assault on a security post in the nearby Bannu district. In Attock district, a suicide bomber trying to infiltrate a crowded area was stopped by an ordinary civilian, who was killed when the bomber detonated his device. The government of Baluchistan also said it has apprehended a female suicide bomber, indicating widespread violence across the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region.
Pakistan has blamed the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for the Bannu attack, but the group has not claimed responsibility. The Afghan Taliban administration has rejected the allegation, with spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid calling it "baseless." The Pakistani Foreign Ministry has summoned the Afghan charge d'affaires, presenting evidence that attackers came from Afghanistan. Pakistan has said on several occasions that the Afghan Taliban must do more to rein in these terrorist groups, and reserves the right to retaliate.
The escalation has deepened tensions between the two neighbours, with Pakistan urging the Afghan Taliban to crack down on armed groups operating near the border.
