Serangan di kota Rehovot memicu kebakaran besar yang menghancurkan laboratorium penting dan arsip puluhan tahun penelitian.
Dikutip dari Tribunnews Rabu (18/6), foto-foto yang menunjukkan kehancuran parah, dinding menghitam, jendela hancur, serta genangan air sisa pemadaman api.
Institut Sains Weizmann adalah simbol keunggulan ilmiah Israel, Dibangun pada 1934 dan dinamai ulang pada 1949.
Institut itu kini menaungi sekitar 2.500 peneliti dan staf.
Weizmann dikenal sebagai motor utama inovasi militer Israel dan terlibat langsung dalam berbagai riset canggih.
Bagi Profesor Eldad Tzahor, peneliti biologi molekuler yang tinggal di kompleks institut selama 22 tahun, kehancuran tersebut begitu membekas.
“Kami memiliki ribuan sampel jantung dari manusia dan hewan. Sekarang, tidak ada yang tersisa,” ujarnya sedih.
Adapun Profesor Oren Schuldiner, yang bekerja selama 16 tahun di Weizmann menyatakan kerusakan ini menjadi kemunduran bagi riset kanker, penyakit, dan sains dasar.
Ia juga menagatakan bukan hanya menghancurkan gedung, tetapi juga menhilangkan kemajuan ilmiah dan teknologi Israel.
Di tengah kerusakan yang luas, para ilmuwan mempertanyakan arah masa depan negara mereka sendiri.
“Apakah semua ini layak? Bukan karena takut pada Iran, tapi karena takut terhadap nasib negara ini sendiri,” kata Profesor Schuldiner. (Tribun-Video.com/Kompas.com)
