The Global North taken to court - Who pays for the climate catastrophe?| DW Documentary
From their lecture halls to the International Court of Justice. Law students from the South Pacific have joined island nations to demand greater climate accountability from industrialized countries. The case before the world's highest court was initiated by 27 law students at the University of the South Pacific, all from islands that could become uninhabitable as sea levels rise and storms grow more frequent.
As might be expected, the Global North has pushed back against their demands for greater responsibility for the consequences of climate change. The United States and Germany argue that international climate law doesn't clearly make countries responsible for past emissions. The young law students are going up against opponents who know the international stage inside and out. What gives them the courage and determination to keep going?
In 2023 they achieved an early victory: their campaign for climate justice won the support of the U.N. General Assembly. That lead to a resolution calling for the international community to take action on climate change.
We follow Vishal from Fiji and Jule from Germany. Both are fighting for justice and compensation for climate-related damage in developing countries. Their journey takes them into the world of international diplomacy, where they confront powerful opponents — among them industrialized nations and oil companies who don't want to have to pay out billions in reparations. All the while, lobbyists and diplomats from major nations try to sway the voices of small island states.
The film captures the optimism of these young people who, full of determination and hope, demand accountability on behalf of the generations to come. Exclusive interviews with judges and historical footage highlight the importance of the case. In July 2025, it all culminates in an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice.
