Why Hungary's Only Nuclear Power Plant Is Running Out of Water | FP Explains

Hungary is facing one of the biggest energy challenges in its modern history. As record-low water levels in the Danube River force the Paks Nuclear Power Plant to cut output, the country is scrambling to keep its electricity grid stable during an intense summer heatwave.
Paks, Hungary's only nuclear power plant, normally supplies around half of the country's electricity. But months of drought and extreme heat have left the Danube too shallow to provide enough cooling water for its reactors. While one generating unit remains operational for now, officials warn a complete shutdown could happen if water levels continue to fall.
