One of the earliest warning signs of heart problems can be erectile dysfunction. It often appears 3 to 5 years before heart disease because the blood vessels that supply an erection are narrower, so problems tend to show up there first.

If you have erectile dysfunction or other warning signs of heart disease, the following tests can help assess your heart health:

• CAC (coronary artery calcium) test
• Ultrasound of the carotid arteries
• Fasting insulin test

If you still get erections during the night or early morning, you may not have a vascular problem.

Testosterone drives libido, not the erection itself. Nitric oxide plays an important role in healthy erectile function, but nitric oxide levels naturally decline with age. Poorly controlled blood sugar, smoking, vaping, sleep apnea, chronic inflammation, certain medications, and a sedentary lifestyle can also decrease nitric oxide.

If you have erectile dysfunction or any other warning signs of heart disease, it’s important to discuss them with your doctor.
