Inside the Goodyear Blimp: Everything You Wanted to Know
Join us for an all-access pass inside the world of the Goodyear Blimp! The Goodyear Blimp is one of the most recognizable and iconic flying machines in the world. But there’s a catch: technically, the modern Goodyear Blimp isn’t actually a blimp at all.
We head to Goodyear’s Wingfoot Lake Airship Base outside Akron, Ohio, the oldest active airship base in the world, to get up close with the modern Goodyear airship and find out how it works, how it’s built, and what makes flying one so different from a conventional aircraft. We get a full cockpit tour from the Chief Pilot and learn all kinds of fascinating facts and figures from the Manager of Maintenance.
And then, of course, we have to fly it. And we fan out all over the place to try and do that – with success (mostly) – including one long distance flight! This video also features the whole crew, with Ian Petchenik, Gabe Leigh, Jason Rabinowitz all out on blimp duty – and Sophia Brüning makes a guest appearance right at the end.
The current Goodyear fleet is based on the Zeppelin NT semi-rigid airship, developed in partnership with Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik in Friedrichshafen, Germany. We explore its unusual structure, propulsion and surprisingly sophisticated cockpit, while learning how more than a century of airship technology has evolved.
Join us to find out what it’s actually like to pilot, fly on, and even touch the fabric of one of aviation’s most enduring icons.
