In this video, I’m going to look at an aspect of climate change that doesn’t really get talked about enough. You often hear people say, “We need to change our behavior, use less electricity, stop flying, recycle more…” but despite all these measures, climate change is still getting worse and worse. I’m going to look at how the term “carbon footprint” first became popular, how some of the biggest fossil fuel companies contributed to the shift in emphasis to individual responsibility, and how this has actually diverted our attention from the real causes of climate change. I’m going to look at the history of climate change science, corporate PR campaigns like BP’s “Beyond Petroleum” brand, and the similarities between the recycling of plastics and the discussion of climate change.References:
