Der Krisenmanager wird zum Krisenfall in der eigenen Partei: Außenminister Johann Wadephul (62, CDU) hat Zweifel an der Rückkehr syrischer Staatsbürger in deren Heimat angemeldet und damit die Union vor den Kopf gestoßen. Das Kanzleramt versucht zu schlichten, doch aus der Fraktion und den Bundesländern kommt heftige Kritik.Am Donnerstag in Damaskus hatte Wadephul überraschend erklärt: Die Rückkehr nach Syrien sei „zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt nur sehr eingeschränkt möglich, weil in der Tat doch sehr viel an Infrastruktur in diesem Land zerstört ist“. Kurzfristig könnten die Menschen „nicht zurückkehren“. Denn: „Hier können wirklich kaum Menschen richtig würdig leben.“
Die Aussagen lösten ein migrationspolitisches Beben aus: Bei SPD und Grünen werden sie begeistert als Absage an Abschiebungen nach Syrien verstanden. Die CDU/CSU-Führung registrierte die Äußerungen nach BILD-Informationen mit Fassungslosigkeit.
