India's employment market is seeing two very different trends at the same time. As the festive season approaches, 53% of employers expect hiring to increase compared with 2025, with strong demand across delivery, warehousing, production and frontline retail. Indeed's Festive Season Outlook 2026 also finds that 74% of employers expect to retain at least 10% of their festive hires beyond the peak period. At the same time, India’s Global Capability Centres are restructuring their workforces. More than 2,100 GCCs employ around 2.5 million professionals, while estimates of job cuts this year range as high as 30,000. AI-led automation is emerging as one factor reshaping roles and tasks. As India’s economy grows, what does this coexistence of hiring and job cuts reveal about the changing nature of employment?
