في 1999، اشترت شركة Compaq شركته الناشئة مقابل 307 ملايين دولار نقدًا. خرج إيلون من الصفقة بحوالي 22 مليون دولار، دخل بها نادي أصحاب الملايين قبل أن يتم الثلاثين. وما تزال هذه الصفقة الى اليوم يحيطها الكثير من الغموض بل ان البعض يقول انها كانت الصناعة الخفية بالتمويل غير المباشر لماسك
لم يكتفِ ماسك بما حصل عليه من Zip2. دفع بكل أرباحه تقريبًا إلى مشروع أكثر جرأة: موقع للدفع عبر الإنترنت سماه X.com. وهو الذي لا يعلمه الكثير ان اكس ليس اسم حديثا بل رمز قديم في امبراطورية ماسك كان يشير له دوما للكائن الغامض المجهول
كان هذا الموقع حلًا بدائيًا لكنه ثوري لزمنه، إذ حلم أن يكون بنكًا رقميًا يلتهم البنوك التقليدية. لاحقًا اندمج X.com مع شركة منافسة اسمها Confinity، وكان منتجها الرئيسي PayPal.
قد يتوقع أي شخص أن يكتفي شاب بثروة تقارب 200 مليون دولار. لكن إيلون لم ينفق أمواله على شراء جزر خاصة ويخوت فاخرة، بل احرقها حرفيًا في الوقود. في عام 2002 أسس SpaceX ، معلنًا أن حلمه إرسال البشر إلى المريخ ولكن هذا الإعلان ليس الا اعلن مشوق لأفلام دور السينما العالمية. علم ماسك ان المنظمة الأكبر تمويلا والأكثر ربحا في أمريكا هي ناسا لإنتاج أفلام الفضاء اذ توصل لمعلومات تظهر كلفة الصاروخ الحقيقي الي كان يقدر ب 3 مليون دولار بينما كان يحقق اكثر من 100 مليون لكل نموذج والبعض يصل لمليارات الدولارات
