Deuxième volet : après l’offensive américaine de 2001, une coalition internationale s’organise pour stabiliser le pays et trouver une solution politique durable.
Un ministère afghan des Affaires féminines et une commission indépendante des droits humains voient le jour; l’optimisme s’éveille dans le pays, comme en témoigne le retour de millions d’Afghans. Mais le tableau s’assombrit: l’envoi de forces américaines sur le sol irakien en 2003 incite les talibans à reprendre le combat, et la corruption devient incontrôlable – des milliards de dollars d’aide internationale sont détournés. La paupérisation de la population gonfle les rangs des talibans. Après l’exécution d’Oussama ben Laden en 2011 par les forces spéciales et le retrait des forces américaines, le pays sombre dans le chaos.
