Saudi Arabia has announced a major mineral discovery in the Madinah (Medina) region, with exploration and geological studies at the Jabal Sayid project indicating an estimated 110 million tonnes of ore containing promising concentrations of uranium along with high concentrations of rare earth elements. The announcement was made by Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman at the IAEA General Conference in Vienna.

The discovery is significant because Saudi Arabia is simultaneously developing its civilian nuclear energy programme, expanding uranium exploration and building a domestic critical-minerals supply chain. The kingdom has also recently signed a U.S.-Saudi civilian nuclear cooperation agreement, giving the latest uranium announcement additional geopolitical importance.

But an important distinction is needed: 110 million tonnes refers to the estimated ore resource, not 110 million tonnes of pure uranium. The precise uranium grade and contained uranium quantity have not been publicly disclosed in the Reuters report, so the headline figure should not be interpreted as 110 million tonnes of uranium metal.

In this video, we explain Saudi Arabia's uranium discovery, the Jabal Sayid project, the role of rare earth minerals, Saudi Arabia's nuclear-energy ambitions, the recent US-Saudi nuclear agreement, and what this development could mean for the Middle East, global energy security and the strategic competition over critical minerals.
