La vittoria rappresenta una rimonta inedita: al primo turno del 4 ottobre Bolsonaro aveva preceduto Lula di circa 2,2 milioni di voti. È la prima volta dal ritorno delle elezioni dirette che il candidato arrivato secondo al primo turno riesce a vincere il ballottaggio. Il tasso di astensione è sceso dal 21% circa del primo turno al 19% del secondo, un elemento che gli alleati di Lula hanno indicato come decisivo per il recupero.
Flávio Bolsonaro non ha riconosciuto il risultato proclamato dal Tribunale Superiore Elettorale e ha annunciato che chiederà l’annullamento delle elezioni. Ha contestato infatti la decisione dell’ultimo minuto del giudice della Corte Suprema Cristiano Zanin di prorogare la votazione di due ore, dopo segnalazioni di problemi nei trasporti pubblici in alcune zone. La proroga era comunque stata richiesta da entrambe le campagne, anche a causa di problemi nei trasporti pubblici e di piogge intense in alcune zone.
