Il rito ha adottato un nuovo formulario liturgico appositamente creato, la "Missa pro custodia creationis", inserito tra le messe "per varie necessità" del Messale Romano. Si è trattato di una celebrazione privata, destinata ai collaboratori del centro Laudato Si'.
Il Giardino della Madonnina, "una cattedrale naturale" circondata da alberi, piante e un fonte d'acqua, ha fatto da scenografia reale alla liturgia. Papa Leone si è soffermato su questa dimensione contemplativa, sottolineando come la Creazione possa condurci "fuori dalla crisi ecologica" grazie a uno sguardo ispirato e riconciliativo. Nella sua omelia, il Pontefice ha ringraziato quanti hanno concepito e realizzato l'evento liturgico, richiamando l'eredità dell'enciclica Laudato Si' di Papa Francesco, ormai dieci anni dopo. Il passaggio che ha creato sconcerto tra i più è stato quando il Pontefice ha richiamato a una "conversione di tante persone, dentro e fuori della Chiesa, che ancora non riconoscono l'urgenza di curare la casa comune". Un passaggio semplificato dai media come "conversione ecologica". Secondo Andrea Cionci, giornalista e autore de "Il Codice Ratzinger", la differenza è sottile.
