El presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, brindó el jueves su primera conferencia de prensa en solitario desde noviembre de 2023, en medio del creciente debate sobre si debería continuar siendo el candidato presidencial del Partido Demócrata. Biden mantuvo su postura desafiante al respecto, afirmó que está decidido a “terminar el trabajo” y reiteró que él es la persona mejor posicionada para vencer a Donald Trump. Asimismo, el presidente estadounidense abordó las preocupaciones sobre su salud mental.“Me he sometido a tres importantes e intensos exámenes neurológicos, realizados por neurólogos, el último de ellos en febrero, y dicen que estoy en buena forma”, expresó el mandatario.
Pero la actuación de Biden en la conferencia de prensa estuvo lejos de ser fluida, ya que cometió el desliz de llamar “vicepresidenta Trump” a la vicepresidenta de Estados Unidos, Kamala Harris. Apenas unas horas antes, durante el cierre de la cumbre de tres días de la OTAN, Biden se refirió erróneamente al presidente ucraniano, Volodymyr Zelensky, como “presidente Putin”.
Tras la conferencia de prensa, otros tres miembros demócratas de la Cámara de Representantes de Estados Unidos instaron al presidente Biden a retirar su candidatura.
