Disconnecting from Achievement Fatigue: Reclaiming Worth Beyond Success | Marilyn Shaw | TEDxSPC

In a world that celebrates productivity and performance, achievement has quietly become a measure of worth. In her TEDx talk, "Disconnecting from Achievement Fatigue," Marilyn Shaw explores the hidden costs of success when it’s fueled by maladaptive perfectionism. She defines “achievement fatigue” as the emotional, physical, and psychological exhaustion that comes from tying self-worth to relentless productivity. Drawing on research showing alarming rises in anxiety, depression, and burnout among high achievers, Marilyn reveals why this issue often goes unnoticed—success itself masks the symptoms.

This talk challenges the assumption that high achievement equates to mental well-being and reveals how perfectionism fuels this cycle. Audiences will discover practical strategies for disconnecting from external validation, redefining success through values-based living, and cultivating self-worth that isn’t dependent on outcomes. With compassion and clarity, Marilyn offers a framework for reshaping achievement so that confidence and self-esteem grow from who we are—not just what we do. Marilyn Shaw is a psychotherapist, educator, and founder of Faitherapy, a nonprofit supporting the mental health of women in leadership. She provides trauma-informed, faith-sensitive care through therapy, group intensives, and coaching for leaders facing burnout and transitions.

A certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor with the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, Marilyn has trained hundreds—including at Hillsborough Community College, the Florida Department of Health, and the Pinellas County Urban League—to recognize and respond to mental health challenges.

Her recent work includes wellness sessions for Hillsborough County Public Schools, trainings at St. Petersburg College, and supporting Florida Blue’s Strike the Stigma initiative with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Marilyn holds a Master’s in Clinical Counseling from Emporia State University and a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from St. Petersburg College, where she is Associate Director of Marketing Projects. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
