Afghanistan cyclist Fariba Hashimi, 23, scripted history at Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya by winning silver medal in women's individual road race with timing of 2 hours 50 minutes 5 seconds, becoming first female medallist for Afghanistan since 2002; Fariba, who fled Afghanistan in 2021 after Taliban takeover and now settled in Italy, once disguised as a man to escape stones and bottles thrown at her for cycling in Faryab, took up cycling at 15 inspired by sister Yulduz Hashimi borrowing bikes from neighbours and made debut in 2017, and finished behind China's Guo Li and ahead of Hong Kong's Leung Wing Yee.
