From a public health perspective, China’s Covid response was excellent. Many infectious disease control best practices were put into place and China’s ability to mobilize was impressive. However, problems resulting from its own governance system undermined the response’s effectiveness: a reluctance to pivot in the face of evidence and a delay and reluctance to report bad news to higher levels of government for fear of repercussions. China is a signatory to the pandemic treaty which requires transparency and action.
