Juno News presses Carney on illegal international students, Smith says "They must go home"
Juno News journalist Alexa Posa asked Prime Minister Mark Carney whether Indian students at Portage College, who are hunger striking after being denied post-graduation work permits, would be deported if they no longer have authorization to remain in Canada.Carney appeared caught off guard, admitting he was "not familiar with the specific case" before saying that if people don't have authorization to stay in Canada, "there's a process that would be followed."
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith took a firmer stance, saying international students whose visas expire without obtaining permanent residency "need to go home." She also called for Alberta to have greater authority to select skilled immigrants for permanent residency.
