It’s been a while since my last piano video.
Over the past few months, I had the opportunity to work on several music projects outside of YouTube, mainly as a keyboard player and pianist. I received quite a few requests — and probably said “yes” a little too often. Still, working with other musicians again and stepping outside of my usual routine gave me some great experiences and a chance to see what else I can be as a musician.
At the same time, it made me realize how much I had missed the creative process behind my own videos: taking a piece of music apart, finding my own approach to it, arranging it, recording it and eventually turning it into a finished video. After finishing those projects, it took me a little while to get back into that mindset. But once I did, it felt very good to be back. So my plan is definitely to spend more time on this kind of work again — and there are already quite a few interesting soundtracks and pieces I’d like to take a closer look at.
For this video, however, I chose neither an original composition nor a typical orchestral soundtrack. Instead, I went back to one of my personal favorite songs from the gaming world: *“Phoenix”, the anthem of the 2019 League of Legends World Championship.*
For me, “Phoenix” has everything I love about epic and cinematic music: a strong build-up, powerful harmonies, memorable melodies and plenty of room for a large-scale piano arrangement.
