The Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster - Explained (Minute by Minute)
Space Shuttle Columbia disaster didn’t begin during re-entry. It began 16 days earlier, with something NASA believed was harmless. In 2003, Columbia launched on what appeared to be a routine mission. The crew carried out experiments, communicated with Mission Control, and prepared for a normal return home. Nothing seemed unusual.
But high above Earth, something had already gone terribly wrong.
As the shuttle re-entered the atmosphere at nearly 17,000 mph, strange sensor failures began appearing inside Mission Control. Temperatures spiked, warning systems started disappearing one by one. Then came the final transmission.
Seconds later, Columbia vanished over Texas.
What followed became one of the deadliest disasters in spaceflight history, and revealed a chain of decisions, overlooked warnings, and hidden damage that changed NASA forever.
