KOMPAS.TV - Puluhan gajah liar yang pernah berkonflik dengan manusia dijinakkan di Pusat Konservasi Gajah Suaka Margasatwa Padang Sugihan, Sumatera Selatan.Di tengah tantangan keberlangsungan hidup, perlu ada ruang aman untuk gajah berlindung.
Terletak di Jalur 21 Sungai Musi, di antara Kabupaten Banyuasin dan Kabupaten Ogan Komering Ilir, Sumatera Selatan, Pusat Konservasi Gajah (PKG) Suaka Margasatwa Padang Sugihan berdiri.
Di sinilah 28 gajah liar yang pernah berkonflik dijinakkan di lahan seluas 88.000 hektar ini.
Gajah-gajah pilihan ini ditugaskan di Posko Pagarapat, seperti gajah Lamora dan Tulus yang dilatih.
Merawat gajah terluka memiliki tantangan sendiri. Selain tingkat kecerdasan yang tinggi, gajah masih memiliki insting liar menghadapi manusia.
Maraknya konflik gajah-manusia disebabkan pergeseran makna dan pengetahuan tentang gajah yang erat kaitannya dengan nilai-nilai kearifan lokal di Sumatera Selatan. Konflik ini membuat turunnya populasi gajah.
Pusat Kajian Sejarah Sumatera Selatan turut menyoroti habitat dan sumber makanan gajah yang kian tergerus.
Pemerintah daerah diharapkan bisa lebih tegas memberi izin usaha maupun pemukiman di kawasan habitat gajah untuk mengurangi konflik antara gajah-manusia.
